Arsenal are closely looking at the situation of Christopher Nkunku at RB Leipzig. The Frenchman is reportedly unhappy with his playing time in Germany.
The Gunners are having a very underwhelming campaign, which sees them sit eleventh in the Premier League table at the time of writing. A top-four finish looks out of sight as they are 12 points adrift of fourth-placed Chelsea. They next face bottom club Sheffield United on Sunday.
They now only have the Europa League to save their season. A crunch midweek trip to Prague awaits to play Slavia in the second leg of the competition’s quarter-finals after the first leg ended 1-1 at the Emirates.
Manager Mikel Arteta needs to strengthen some key areas ahead of next season if he wants to avoid another torrid season. One important area which needs much strengthening this season is attacking midfield, with the Gunners short in numbers in that position.
Arsenal’ interest in Nkunku:
The club signed Martin Odegaard in the January transfer window. But the Norwegian will likely return to Real Madrid after the expiration of his loan deal at the Emirates. This will leave only Emile Smith-Rowe as a proper no.10 at the club.
As a result, the club will definitely try to sign an attacking midfielder this summer. There are few players on the club’s radar with RB Leipzig’s Christopher Nkunku one of them. The 23-year-old has been an integral figure for Die Roten Bullen since joining the club in 2018.
He has scored 12 goals and provided 24 assists in 76 appearances during that time. The former Paris Saint-Germain man is capable of playing at right wing-back, central midfield, and on either wing. But he mainly operates as an attacking midfielder.
His pace and versatility with an eye for a killer pass make him a lethal asset for any team in the world. He is also an elite dribbler. And at a young age, he has room to improve as well.
Nkunku unsettled at Leipzig:
There is good news for Arsenal in their pursuit to sign Christopher Nkunku. According to Sport BILD via Sport Witness, Nkunku is unhappy with his game time at Leipzig and will push for a move this summer.
And this has been backed by German reporter Christian Falk who says that Nkunku is on Leipzig’s transfer list for the summer, though his price would be quite high. And that’s quite understandable given he has a contract at Leipzig running till 2024. Despite making 32 appearances this season, he has never made three consecutive starts since January. Falk said:
“Leipzig is a bit shaken at the moment and so Nkunku is also on the out list. I would say it will be difficult because he is tied down and has a £40 million market value. [Alternatives like Julian Brandt or Julian Draxler] are a bit easier to achieve. But from quality point, they would, of course, be a club that would definitely be an upgrade for him.”
Arsenal are long-term admirers of Nkunku. They could be even more interested in him now given the lack of creativity in their ranks. Nkunku might be a pricey option, but surely has the quality to be a great player at Arsenal.
