Arsenal looking to start transfer business by signing £13.5M contract rebel

Joelson Fernandes, dubbed as the next ‘Cristiano Ronaldo’ is eyed by Arsenal as he denies contract extension

Arsenal is planning to begin their transfer business with a swoop for Portuguese prospect Joelson Fernandes. TVI24 has reported the Gunners are looking to sign the 17-year-old, who is embroiled in fractious contractual talks with Sporting Lisbon.

Arsenal syncing well with Arteta and youngsters

Mikel Arteta has used his managerial skills to bring the best out of whatever Emery left for him. However, he has already sidelined a few players. Ostensibly, in both brackets – Matteo Guendouzi, Mesut Ozil and Sokratis are all waiting for exit options.

Amidst the diaspora, the Gunners are looking for fresh signings to deal with exits and further squad developments. There are some obvious impediments that stand in the way for Arteta. Kroenke has had a history with Arsène about the disposal of funds. Arteta may fear a similar fate.

Arsenal fans tickled a similar nerve when a plane flew over Villa Park. “Back Arteta, Kroenke Out”, it read. But the Spaniard has remained calm and optimistic about the management and above all, transfers.

Regardless, it is true every team will suffer the brunt of the pandemic as budgets will falter. So, they are prioritizing the ones that can come cheap. Raw talents that can be honed well instead of established superstars. That is the reason they have looked away from the Havertz or Sancho saga.

Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka have been wonderful finds for the Gunners. Saka has solved a few problems of positional stringency as he has been great at almost all positions. Martinelli, on the other hand, has flaunted his attacking prowess. Multiple elite European clubs may have rejected the Brazilian, but the Gunners have nursed him well.

Joel Fernandes the next ‘Cristiano Ronaldo’ ?

Joelson Fernandes is another such talent currently playing for Sporting Lisbon. The Bissau born winger has shown tremendous promise in the Liga Revelacao with 5 goals and 2 assists this season. At the age of 17, he has been compared to Luiz Figo, Quaresma, and Cristiano Ronaldo.

The youngster has pace, eye for goal, and the thirst to go for goal throughout the game – a perfect set of reasons to be in demand in the transfer market. Additionally, a perfect set of reasons to be a future star.

Interestingly, he has a release clause of €45 million and a contract that runs out in 2022. But the Portuguese winger is denying an extension. In that case, the club may risk letting him leave for free by the time he is just 19.

Joelson became Sporting’s third-youngest debutant at the age of 17 years, 4 months, and 3 days as they defeated Vicente Gil 2-1. “I just want to play football”, he told O Jogo. No wonder he has a great future, but where, is the real question?

Transfer Interests

Arsenal is trying to get the ‘contract rebel’ cheaply with hardly 2 years left as leverage. Real Madrid used similar leverage to get Hazard and Courtois. They have bid €15 million for the 17-year-old. Fernandes’s agent is trying to milk the situation too, as he knows how deep premier league clubs’ pockets are!

With Barcelona and Juventus interested too, only time will tell where the next ‘Cristiano Ronaldo’ lands and when.
