Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta wanted Umtiti to lead the Arsenal defense. Arsenal look at options of Umititi.
There were rumors of Arsenal eyeing up a move for Umtiti. Also he was one of the players Barcelona had listed as dispensable. But in a recent turn of events it looks like he won’t be leaving.
According to Marca Samuel Umtiti will almost certainly be at Barcelona next season. The player has found new life under head coach Quique Setien. He has shown belief in the young Frenchmen and Umtiti too is sure of his role under Setien.
All this comes as a blow for Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta as he was hoping to land Umtiti. The Frenchman under Valverde was under much scrutiny and was the perfect candidate for Arsenal. But now it seems the club will have to look elsewhere.
Some other alternatives for Arsenal to look upon
1) Dayot Upamecano
It looks like everyone knows Upamecano nowadays. The Frenchman at just 21 is becoming the leading emerging defender in the game right now. Upamecano has 30 appearances for Leipzig in all competitions this season.
He is an important part of the Leipzig squad and has attracted the attention of some of Europe’s top clubs. Arsenal is to interested in him. Although right now his market value is around 50 million. The Gunners would be advised to move quickly.
2) Kalidou Koulibaly
Kalidou Koulibaly plays at Center back for Italian giants Napoli. The player has shown leadership and dominance in his play in the Serie A. United and Liverpool are also very interested in his skill set.
Arsenal needs someone like that to come over and take control of their shaky defense line. Although Napoli is demanding an 80 million-plus figure for the Senegalese international. It’s a tough decision for Arsenal. However if they spend that much on Koulibaly they won’t have funds left for any other signing.
3) Daniele Rugani
Rugani a few seasons back had a reputation like Upamecano has this season. Some of Europe’s top clubs were after him. But now the situation has changed. Rugani has just 3 appearances for the Italian club this season. He was also tested for Corona Virus which was asymptomatic in nature.
Rugani could be the one to solve Arsenal’s defensive problems. While the player too could use a restart in his career. According to team talk, Arsenal could sign him for 25 million.
Should the Gunners pull this off it would be a great move for them as Rugani is just 25 years old. While he also has the potential to lead the Gunners defense along with Willian Saliba.
4) Willy Boly
Wolverhampton has gone a complete transformation under head coach Nuno. They are one of the best defensive outfits in the premier league right now. And Willy Boly has been a key part of that.
Willy Boly is experienced and a tried and tested veteran of the game. He is entering the last year of his contract with Wolves and would be a good signing for Arsenal.
It would also be a move up in Boly’s career although Wolves sit higher up, that is just this season. His market valuation is also around 20 million but considering Jimenez’s case, Nuno won’t make it easy for Arsenal.
One thing is for sure that the Gunners will surely be one of the most active clubs in the coming windows.
