Arsenal could have another chance to sign Borussia Dortmund playmaker Julian Brandt this summer. The German club are ready to sell the midfielder for a reported £25 million fee.
The Gunners were heavily interested in bringing Brandt to the Emirates Stadium in the January transfer window. But the 24-year-old opted to stay in Germany and fight for his place. He has made 25 appearances this season.
Arsenal instead went and signed Martin Odegaard on-loan from Real Madrid. However, the London club could have another opportunity to sign Brandt in the upcoming transfer window, with Dortmund keen to raise some funds.
Manager Mikel Arteta knows the importance of adding a new creative midfielder to his squad ahead of next season. His team has lacked the creative edge this campaign, which is evident from their current Premier League position.
The Gunners need of an attacking midfielder
Arsenal started the current season with Mesut Ozil as their chief creator. But after his controversial exit from the club in January, the club went out and brought Martin Odegaard. The Norwegian initially struggled to get in the team but has done well in recent games.
The Gunners’ main problem is negotiating a permanent deal with Odegaard’s parent club Real Madrid. The Los Blancos sees Odegaard’s future at the Santiago Bernabeu and will only sell him for a high price, something Arsenal won’t be able to match.
Another Real loanee who will return back to Madrid from Arsenal is Dani Ceballos. The Spaniard is in his second loan spell at London and will likely return to his parent club, given his poor performances this season.
This will leave Arteta with only Emile Smith-Rowe as his attacking midfielder. And despite the talent of the young Englishman, he can’t be the club’s starting no.10 for next season. As a result, Arteta needs a new midfielder ahead of next season to add creativity to his struggling side.
Dortmund to sell Brandt amid Arsenal’ interest:
Brandt decided to stay at Dortmund amidst links from Arsenal in January. His decision has been rewarded with the German making 25 appearances in all competitions this summer, seven of which came in the Champions League.
However, his performances in those games have been very underwhelming as per Dortmund’s viewing. He has two goals and a solitary assist to his name this season. And according to Sport Bild, via Sport Witness, this poor run of form has left Dortmund with a decision to sell the midfielder to cover up for the losses due to the global pandemic. The report also suggests that Arsenal are among the potential suitors to sign Brandt.
Dortmund’s asking price will be around £25 million, which is significantly lower than what the player valued it. According to the CIES, Brandt is valued at £62.5 million with his Dortmund contract running till 2024.
This would a bargain for Arsenal given the price and the quality of the player. Brandt would easily slot in that vacant no.10 position at Arsenal and would provide much-needed creativity as he did during his Bayer Leverkusen days.
