Mikel Arteta’s side are now reliant on Europa League to qualify for next season’s Champions League. But they face Greek side Olympiacos in the next round, the same side that knocked them out of the competition last season.
The Gunners were busy in both transfer windows this season. In the summer, they shelled out £50 million for Partey, £30 million on Gabriel, and also signed Willian and Alex Runarsson. Then in January, they did loan deals for Martin Odegaard and Matt Ryan. There were some high-profile exits from the Emirates as well. The likes of Mesut Ozil, Sokratis, and Shkodran Mustafi all left the club in the January transfer window.
Now the club are looking to go out again in the upcoming summer transfer window. But they have to sell before they can sign any player.
Arsenal re-ignite their interest in Aouar:
Mikel Arteta wanted Houssem Aouar last summer. The club couldn’t get a deal over the line as they failed to meet Lyon’s asking price for the midfielder. But, according to Calciomercato, Arsenal are still interested in the 22-year-old attacking midfielder and are ready to go again for him this summer.
Arteta sees the French midfielder as key to his future plans. They are short in numbers in midfield. Dani Ceballos and Odegaard will likely return to Real Madrid at the end of the campaign. Joe Willock will also leave the club. Partey has had recurring injury problems in his first season. That will leave Arsenal with only Granit Xhaka and Mohammed Elneny.
But with limited funds available, the club will first have to sell before they can make a move for Aouar. Alexandre Lacazette, Hector Bellerin, Reiss Nelson, Eddie Nketiah, and Lucas Torriera are some of the names Arsenal will look to ship out to generate sufficient funds for their prime target in Aouar.
Another stumbling block for Arsenal in their pursuit of Aouar is that they are likely to face stiff competition for him. Manchester City and Juventus, in particular, are also keeping an eye on the player.
Juventus also want Aouar:
Just like Arsenal, Juventus wanted Aouar last summer. But the Lyon midfielder decided to stay with the French club for another season. And according to the same report, Juventus will go again for Aouar this summer to acquire his services.
The Old Lady recently confirmed the permanent deal for American midfielder Weston McKennie. But manager Andrea Pirlo wants to boost his midfield even more in the summer. And the Lyon star is the favourite target for the Turin club’s manager.
Lyon have set the price tag of £55 million for Aouar and will not tolerate any discounts, despite the current economic climate. Juventus are ready to offer a player swap to get Aouar. Full-back Mattia de Sciglio, who is currently on-loan at Lyon, and Federico Bernardeschi are the two-players Juventus willing to give as part of a deal for Aouar.
It remains to be seen whether Lyon will accept Juventus’ swap deal or will they wait for Arsenal to sell their players and then make a bid for Aouar.
