Arsenal are in the market for an influential midfielder and according to Bild’s reporter Christian Falk, they are considering making a move for Borussia Dortmund player, Julian Brandt if their negotiation to land Martin Odegaard doesn’t succeed.
Julian Brandt made his proper youth debut when he joined VfL Wolfsburg. After training there for 4 years, he joined Bayer Leverkusen. He had to wait for his chance and was finally able to showcase himself when he got his professional debut in February 2014. The following season onwards, he became an important player in the Leverkusen squad.
He spent 6 years with them and made a name for himself. Brandt went on to break a few records whilst he made over 200 appearances. He became the youngest player in the Bundesliga since Gerd Muller to score in 6 consecutive matches. Along with that, he also became the youngest Leverkusen player to cross 100 Bundesliga appearances aged 21-years and 3 months.
He joined Borussia Dortmund in 2019 when they activated his €25 million release clause. Although he hasn’t been in his best form, he has been selected often. This is his 2nd season with them and he has made 84 appearances.
Martin Odegaard is also having struggles of his own. After playing for a year at a club in Norway, he joined Real Madrid in a deal that cost Los Blancos €8 million. After joining them, he was made to play for the reserve team to gain experience. However, he was finding it difficult to settle there and was soon dropped.
A few months later, he became the youngest player to debut for the club at the age of 16 years and 167 days. He was sent on various loan spells since then and only made multiple appearances for Real Madrid this season.
Dortmund player a good backup option for Arsenal if Odegaard deal fails:
Martin Odegaard is currently on loan at Arsenal after failing to get more playtime at his parent club. However, he has been excellent at the London club. Since joining them in January, he has become a primary choice to play in Arsenal’s midfield. His performance has been so influential that the fans are demanding to make the move permanent.
The Gunners are also trying to make the deal happen as they can feel his presence felt on the team. However, getting him won’t be easy. Odegaard still has 2 years left on his contract with Madrid. If Arsenal wants to approach him, Los Blancos will surely place a hefty tag on him every single money is crucial during the pandemic time.
“Odegaard is playing quite well, and they would probably like to keep him. But he is definitely too expensive, so they will bring out the old plans from January.
We have already talked about Julian Brandt from Dortmund and that he is a player that Arsenal would like. He will only cost €25m, but of course, it’s a matter of negotiation.” – Christian Falk while talking about the deal.
Since Arsenal cannot splash that much money, they will be looking elsewhere. And a proper substitute has also been found. Once Mesut Ozil left the club, Arsenal have been searching for a replacement for him. Julian Brandt was a potential name on the list. However, the club’s inability to produce finance saw them settle for a loan deal.
The Premier League side might not have expected Martin Odegaard to be of such influence. They were looking for temporary stability and search for a player in the summer window. But now they will negotiate with Madrid, and if that fails, bidding for a €25 million Julian Brandt looks plausible.
