Mumbai Indians kick-started their title defence with a heartbreaking defeat over Royal Challengers Bangalore. The game was so intense that it was stretched to the final ball of the game. However, RCB somehow found a way to come out on top as they won the game by 2 wickets.
The defending champions took on Kolkata Knight Riders in the second game at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The match witnessed a low-scoring encounter as Mumbai Indians scored 152 in the first innings. Suryakumar Yadav top-scored with 56 off 36 balls (7 fours, 2 sixes).
Rohit Sharma was not at his best during the game but played a steady knock. He scored 43 off 32 balls with the help of 3 fours and 1 six. Apart from Suryakumar and Rohit, all others failed to add value to the scoreboard.
KKR batsmen got off to a flying start to the game. Their opening pair Shubman Gill and Nitish Rana laid the foundation by constructing a 72-run partnership. While things were moving smoothly, Rahul Chahar provided a much-needed breakthrough by dismissing Gill for 33.
Meanwhile, Chahar got rid of Rahul Tripathi and captain Eoin Morgan as well. Nitish Rana went on to score his first half-century of this season. The southpaw ended up scoring 57 off 47 balls with the help of 6 boundaries and 2 sixes.
In the end, he also fell prey to Chahar’s bowling strategy. The right-arm leg-break bowler got rid of Rana in the last ball of the 15th over. But still, they had the likes of Dinesh Karthik and Andre Russell to seal the deal for KKR.
Russell reacts to SRK tweet on KKR defeat
Despite having wickets and overs in hand, KKR bottled the game against MI. The defending champions stunned KKR by defending a low-scoring target. MI won the game by 10 runs. Chahar was named the Player of the Match. After the defeat, KKR co-owner Shah Rukh Khan took to Twitter and apologised to his fans.
“Disappointing performance. to say the least @KKRiders apologies to all the fans!.” Andre Russell who took 5/15 in the match against MI replied to SRK’s tweet in the post-match press conference. “Yeah, I support that Tweet but at the end of the day the game of cricket… you are not sure until it’s over. I think we are still confident, we still played some good cricket and I am proud of the boys,” Russell added.
Majority of the fans reckon that this is pure match-fixing!
