According to reports, La Liga giants Real Madrid have joined the race for Chelsea target Jules Kounde. New manager Carlo Ancelotti wants Kounde at Santiago Bernabeu as a priority signing. The report also adds that the Frenchman has also been on Florentino Perez’s ‘radar’ for quite some time.
The Sevilla defender missed just 5 matches and had 49 appearances in all competitions in 2020-21. He helped his team finish 4th in the La Liga and helped them qualify for the Champions League after two years.
The young Frenchman has been impressive for Sevilla. Kounde hopes to join a team capable of competing for major trophies. Sevilla will want around €70 million for the 22-year-old.
Real Madrid to lock horns with Chelsea for Kounde
Real Madrid has recently upped their efforts to sign Kounde after Ancelotti expressed his wish to sign the Sevilla defender. The Italian wants to make him his first signing since returning to Madrid. With first-choice center-backs Sergio Ramos not signing an extension and Raphael Varane rumored to be leaving, the Los Blancos need defensive reinforcements.
“Regarding my future, it is certain that I will perhaps have to change clubs this summer, but nothing has been finalized yet I have not decided anything.”
The Frenchman has said he wants a move to a top club and dreams of winning trophies. Though he is happy at the Spanish club and putting in great performances, he has not ruled out a move. Only 22 years old, he is a great prospect who has the potential to evolve into one of the best in the future.
Kounde was also included in France’s provisional squad for the Euros after catching the eye of France manager Didier Deschamps.
UCL Champions Chelsea also want Kounde. Tuchel admitted that the club is looking to recruit some reinforcements before the start of the next season. The German wants to add more quality to an already formidable defense. Reports suggest Tuchel wants to bring in a young center-back to add competition for places. Kounde could be the perfect option.
Who can sign Kounde?
Real Madrid and Chelsea are the top contenders to land Kounde. The Los Blancos are already in need of a center-back, with Sergio Ramos pretty much confirmed to be leaving. The opportunity to move to a big club such as Real Madrid and work under Carlo Ancelloti could be appealing to the young star. Kounde would not have to prove himself in a new league and would settle right in the Real squad.
Meanwhile, Chelsea has just won the UEFA Champions League and has a considerably younger squad compared to Real Madrid. With Cesar Azpilicueta, Andreas Christensen, Kurt Zouma, Thiago Silva, and Antonio Rudiger already making up the defensive roster, Kounde might be restricted to the bench.
Other Premier League clubs such as Manchester United and Arsenal are also interested. Ole Gunner Solskajaer looks to strengthen his defense after losing out on the Europa League trophy.
The Red Devils could very challenge for the Premier League title if they manage to sign long-time target Raphael Varane or Kounde. While a move to Arsenal seems unlikely after the Gunners finished 8th this season.
